ZF 8Speed Auto Tranmission load ratings

I was doing some digging around ZF's website on the 8 speed auto

Looks like there's 4 versions of the tranny for 4 different load profiles
http://www.zf.com/corporate/en/produ...smission.shtml
8HP30 (rated to 221 ft-lb)
8HP45 (rated to 369 ft-lb)
8HP70 (rated to 516 ft-lb)
8HP90 (rated to 737 ft-lb)

I was wondering which version was in my F30 335 Sport Auto - checking RealOEM.com it looks like the N55 equipt 335i's come with the 8HP45 (as do the N20 328's, x's come with the AWD version of the 8HP45). The F30 330d's will have the 8HP70 (to deal with all that oil burning torque)

Makes me wonder if the 8HP70 could be direct swapped with the 8HP45 on modded F30 N55's.

Anybody have any insight?

Looks like the 8HP45 is used all the way down the line to the 316i. Additionally, the 8HP45 is the transmission on the 320d which makes me think if the 8HP45 can mate up to the N47 motor then maybe since the 8HP70 come on the N57 it would fit the N55 as well.

Not exactly QED, but gut says it's probably all the same

If I had an 8spd auto N55, I would be nervous to mod it. It would not take much to make 400lbs of tq to the wheels.

Seems like the swap would be an easy choice, I'm guessing it would be plug and play. The only thought is cost, would it make more sense to take the same money and have your stock transmission built up?

Found this on ZF's website - interesting read
http://www.zf.com/media/media/img_1/...Produkt_EN.PDF
Also shows the 8HP70 is 22lbs heavier than the 8HP45 - was hoping the difference between the two was just bigger clutch packs, but at 22lbs it must be more than that

What is your guess on the increased weight? 13% increase in weight seems like a lot.

Could be the sum of it's parts, little springs and internal stuff that all add up over the course of 8 gears. Probably even the gears themselves might be a bit beefier and/or different material in order to support the strenuous load.
