Post The M4 Hits the Roads for Testing. Yes, the M3 Coupe is an M4.

M4 Coupe

We have been talking about it and I know there are still some of you who dislike it -- but the M4 Coupe is coming in 2015. It is a bold move by BMW but they can make people forget about the name if they just make the car flat out incredible to drive.

Today we have the first pictures of the new M4 out for testing on the street. These pictures start to give us an indication as to what to expect from the next generation M4 including:
  • Blue brakes - Large cross drilled brake rotors and blue calipers that look like they're off the BMW M6
  • No sunroof - The test mule is sporting a carbon fiber roof, similar to the M6 coupe
  • Quad exhaust - The sign of an M car from the rear
  • 19 inch wheels - Slender 10 'double spoke' style rims will be stock with a 20 inch optional wheel we have yet to see
  • Its wide - While the fender shape has been hidden under camo the extra width of the car is obvious.

Right now you might just think this is a regular old F32 coupe under testing but the quad exhaust really gives it away. A fair amount of the parts that are not camo'd up will most likely be replaced with M specific parts as the car approaches it's launch date but BMW doesn't like to show off too much at one time!

BMW M4 Coupe Exhaust

Are you excited or disappointed with the name change? Can an incredible driving experience make you forget about the M3 name?

I just have this feeling that they are going to surprise us with the M4. That render looks nice but I'm just thinking there will be a feature that sticks out from the traditional mold.

They are making a choice to separate the coupe / sedan lines like they do with the 5 series and 6 series. The 3 Series Coupe is becoming the 4 Series as well.

They have been talking about doing this for MANY years but it looks like they are finally going through with it this time.

If it ends up being a blast to drive -- I'm not sure that anyone is going to care.

Is it me or does the side profile (hood ends above the windshield base; slope of the cabin, especially between the A and B pillars; slope of the trunk) look kinda like a Mustang? Really hope they do well with the camo'd and M bits as the renders I've seen DO NOT make we want to buy one

So they want all 3 series to be sedans, all 4 series to be coupes?

5 series were all sedans and 6 series were all coupes.

but they just released a 4 door 6 series.

*head explodes*

lol!

Also remember that the 8 series BMWs were the coupe companion to 7 series back in the 1980s and 1990s.

So now BMW will have all the numbers covered 1 thru 8 and on paper it looks clean and tidy!

1-Series sedan with the 2-Series as its coupe companion

3-Series sedan with the 4-Series as its coupe companion

5-Series sedan with the 6-Series as its coupe companion

7-Series sedan with the 8-Series being its coupe companion

And this is me praying they bring the 8 series back in the near future as the BMW super car!

Yes the name change irritates me. They should have made the sedan the M4. I don't care what the other series' naming system is. However that would not keep me from buying the car. What WILL keep me from buying the car is how disproportionate it is. The front is decent but the back looks terrible. Where are the flared fenders? Quit being bitches and flare the rear a bit more. It doesn't flow at all and when I look at the whole package it doesn't wow or excite me. Frankly, it looks like they were going good with the front of the car and didn't know how to finish the rear. It reminds me of hyundai's new models (I know I know I'm sorry). It looks more like a boat than a sports coupe. If it comes with paddles and a hot first mate I will consider buying it. I'm upset about how it's turning out and I'm sure it drives great, but this design is not worth 70k+. They've drifted too far away from what I think a 3 series should look like. IMHO.

tldr - name change irritating but not deal breaker, rear is uggo. Save the boat design for the 5&6 series. Better luck next model

It is true that the rear looks similar to mustang's, well at least in the camo.
With the legendary inline 6 and turbos, that M4 is going to be a blast.
I actually like their naming standards of odd for sedan and even for coupes. I dont know, I think it will be easier for their book keeping and they will have more different models in the line up.
Imagine: BMW came with 2 new models this year; M3 and M4. That would look nice for their advertisement rather than: BMW came out with a new M3 which can be purchased in sedan or coupe forms.
It is just a marketing strategy.
But I wonder what would they have named a touring

Like delmarco, I am waiting for the 8 series. i8??? I hope its not an electric car as their concept i8. I dont see a point of a super car being electric.
