F30 Spied in the Final Sheet Metal

F30 Spied

That's right boys and girls, BMW has finally dropped the massive plastic body camo on the F30 sedan test mule and we can now see the final sheet metal! While the swirly paint still disguises details of the final design shapes we're able to get a good sense of the proportions and the green house (roof and A, B and C pillar) lines.

The F30 is a clear continuation of the sizing and roof lines set by the E90 and appears to be a much less dramatic departure from the current styling than each of the previous 3 series.

The changes that will set the F30 apart from the outgoing E90/E91/E92/E93 are a wider front kidney grill set (but not as wide as the F10 5 Series) and top and bottoms of the corona rings (angle eyes) cut off like we've seen on the Vision concept cars.

The F33 convertible will get a folding hard top again despite the new F13 6 Series getting a soft top. The mechanisms will be similar but improved over the E93 and the weight will be reduced making the convertible feel that much more coupe like with the top up.

State site we will get the all new 2.0 4 cylinder turbo engine in the base 328 while the 335 will get a re-tuned N55 single turbo inline 6 cylinder. In Europe look for a turbo 3 cylinder and of course a slew of diesel engines. State side expect a single diesel engine choice.

Production is slated to start as early as Q3 2011 with the first production versions hitting dealer showrooms as MY (model year) 2012s.

The 3 keeps getting worse... e36 was perfect. e46 reminded us perfection could be made better.... From e46 on they remind us of why we like the previous models so much better /thread

Those styles had their moment in the sun

Like it or not nobody would be buying bmws if they still looked the same.

Audi and Mercedes Benz are making beautiful cars. Its sad to see BMW getting buried in terms of esthetics.

Oh man, those mirrors are awful... but I'll reserve my final judgment for the final product. Hopefully, it will end up looking nicer than it does in camo.

you guys are just being jelous...

e36 was nice

e46 is still quite nice

i drive e9X all the time....
good fuel economy compared to the e46, handles well, nicely equipped, and the
iDRIVE is amazing once you get used to it.

The beauty of the 3-Series ended after the E46.

People hated the e36 when it came out. Said it was too heavy. Now it's "classic."

IMO e90 styling will not pass the test of time but e92s look great.

I agree, the e92 is easily the best of the current lot. I'm sure the new F30 equivalent will be a looker, too. Well.... I hope so.

you guys will get used to it. BMW knows what they're doing! And the mirrors are large due to safety laws. cars in the US began to adopt this around 2007 or 2008. Remember when the E90 switched over to larger mirrors? It's also the reason why modern cars and modern BMWs don't have their kidney grills integrated into the hood. Safety regulations. BMW has a lot of laws to work around, designing cars isn't as easy as you think. GIven that, BMW is doing an exceptional job as they always have. The new F3X platform will be an absolute hit.

also.. i like how the front of e46s doesnt look like a face.. i hate when i drive down the road and see a mazda 3 or nissan juke smiling at me with that stupid look on its face.

the front of this car looks more like a face.. but at least it looks pretty mean and menacing
