My Ride: 2013 328d Xdrive
Ordered: Racechip Pro 2 for 328d

I've recently traded in my 2013 328ix for a 2014dx sportline. I had the aFe Scorcher on the the 328i and wanted to run a piggyback on the diesel. I know there are other modules out there but I've been checking these guys out and it looks promising. I had almost 37,000 miles on my car when I traded it in and that's over a period of 16 months. I commute about 106 miles round trip a day here in Alaska, the reason for the xdrive. The aFe module made a nice difference in mpg (and performance) I was able to get as much as 529 miles out of a single tank. Racechip is quoting a "up to 5 mpg" increase on their product so 50 mpg on the hwy is not out of the question considering that I'm getting 48 right now on highway stretches. I'll give a "seat of the pants" evaluation once I get it installed and have a few miles on it.

Link below for the specs

Some of you may have seen that I have the aFe module up for sale, PM me if you have questions/interest. I wanted to put it up to the community before I listed it on ebay.

So I finally got my car back today, a side story on that. I bought my car on 14th of March and dropped it back off to the dealer on Monday, the 17th, to have a clear armor package put on. I went back Tuesday to pick it up and there was a good sized gouge in the paint on the passenger door under the handle, and a nice chip on the hood (now under the clear armor). Needless to say, I was not impressed, took them until today to get it right to my satisfaction. Also....I had CF rear spoiler on my trade in and they took it off for me.......and cracked it! SERIOUSLY!!??
I found out today from the service manager that the will be replacing it with a $550 dollar ///M spoiler.

On with the write-up!

The Race Chip Pro 2 was purchased from http://www.rakuten.com/prod/performa...261462842.html. I was able to upgrade to 2 day express shipping for free. That may not seem like a big deal, but living in Alaska, we rejoice when we just a decent rate.

The chip itself was nicely packaged: chip on top, followed by instructions on the next level, and then the wiring and other items in the bottom.

The install took less than 10 minutes, and the majority of that was used taking the pictures. The instructions were logically laid out and easy to follow.

First thing was to remove the engine cover and find the wiring harness with the correct plug. At first I didn't see it, but once lifted the insulation cover I found it.

The next step was to unplug the stock plug and plug up the Race Chip harness plug, then insert the stock plug into the Race Chip wiring harness.

Next, remove the dummy plug from the Race Chip harness. Make sure you keep that, you can unplug your Race Chip and put the dummy plug in to return your car to stock settings without having to unplug the whole harness (nice touch).

Now, plug the Race Chip into the harness and lock it down with the purple slide lock.

Finally, place the Race Chip in a safe location (it is waterproof) and use the zip ties to secure it. That is the only thing I'm not too crazy about, I'm going to get some industrial strength velcro and put it in the same place (the is the way the aFe Scorcher is mounted).

I took it out for a quick drive and noticed immediately that the acceleration was quicker and smoother, gone was the flat spot coming off the line, no error codes. During the winter months, winter blend diesel is the only thing available here (for good reason), but it does cut down on power and mileage considerably. I have a Ford F250 with a chipped 7.3 that will get 18-20 mpg with summer blend, 14 mpg with winter.

The car was averaging 37 mpg combined before putting in the chip and it only had about 470 miles on it. It's going to be a little hard to use that as benchmark for comparison but I'll run the chip for awhile and see what happens with the winter blend. When the summer blend comes back, I'll run a tank or two with the dummy plug and see what kind of difference there is.

If you're looking for dyno numbers, you're not going to get if from me. I'm not going to spend the money on something just to prove or disprove what the manufacturer claims. If I "feel" an improvement in acceleration, great! I commute 105 miles a day, I don't autocross or run 1/4 mile with it. If it improves my mpg (up to 5 mpg is the claim) great! I'm happy. If this works close to the aFe unit I had in my 328ix, I will be a happy camper.

I'll report updates as I see fit or answer any questions that I can.

Thanks!

I'll try and give a detailed update when I have time. I didn't think anyone cared since there has not been any comments.

Overall I've been happy with the results, I'm still experiencing a slight increase in full economy but probably not as much as I would've expected.

Sorry, trying to do this from my phone app and the pics are loading sideways and I can't see the details. But each one shows the overall miles and mpg for that run. I still plan (soon) on disconnecting the chip and running it stock for a couple of tanks.

As I mentioned before, I'm not planning on running this on a dyno, but from seat of the pants, there's a noticeable difference in turbo lag (virtually none) and and an increase in hp/torque. In sport mode it feels more like a 6 cylinder carving through turns.

I have noticed a rough idle when I first have a cold start, goes away after warming up.

No increase in engine noise, in fact, I had a fried riding with me the other day who was amazed when I told him it was a diesel.

That's all for now, thumbs ate getting good tired. Lol

I also should add that 80% of what I drive us highway, but the numbers above reflect combined city and highway driving.

Interested on your follow up report here. I have a 2014 328d. Performance is great in sport plus and mpg avg is around 45 combined. But hey I'm a man and more power and mpg is always a good thing.

Is yours X-drive? Mine is. I need to pull the chip and run it stock and see what kind of numbers (mpg) I get. Problem is, I can make myself do it, so much nicer to drive with it in!

No xdrive for me. I have the luxury of not having to commute when the weather is bad. I averaged 45mpg from DC to Orlando for family vacation a few weeks ago. 74mph avg for that distance too. Sweet ride.

This is off-topic, but do you mind me asking why you traded in your 328i for the 328d? Was it for the sport line/improved fuel economy? I'm curious because I'm about to order a 328 myself, and as of right now, I'm leaning towards the gasoline more than the diesel.

It was purely for mpg, I commute over 100 miles per day. I can fill once and drive through the whole week vs filling on Monday and then again on Friday.
